About Julie Lowe

What I do

I know everyone says they love what they do - but I genuinely do!

Zip Upholstery is based in rural Warwickshire but only a stone’s throw from Stratford upon Avon, Solihull & Redditch.

Whether it’s a Wing Back Chair or Sofa that’s been handed down or an unloved Footstool that’s seen better days - I can bring it back to life for future generations and give it some TLC.

I can also be commissioned to produce one-off items of furniture – offering a tailor-made bespoke upholstery service. This is the ideal solution if you’re looking for a unique item - but, if you just need a bit of guidance, I’m also on hand to share my interiors knowledge to ensure your piece sits comfortably within your decor and room style, it's the right fabric, style & size.

I create beautiful new pieces and also re-upholster everything from Victorian Sofas and Wingback Chairs to Box Cushions and Dining Chairs.

I take on each piece looking to turn it into a Masterpiece. I begin by stripping a piece back to inspect the quality of the frame, repair any faults such as worn joints and loose screws and check the integrity of the piece. Then I'll ensure the webbing is intact, removing and replacing the filling and padding. Upholstery is not just about aesthetics, it needs to be comfy! Then it’s onto the finishing touches such as Button Holes and double & bespoke piping.

Below’s a little taste of what I can help you with:

  • Wingback Upholstered Chairs
  • Deep Buttoned Footstools
  • Upholstered Sofas
  • Bespoke Footstools & Chairs
  • Headboards
  • Cushions
  •

    How it all began...

It all began when I found I had an absolute passion for giving furniture a new lease of life. Based at my shop, Henley Vintage in Henley in Arden, I would be commissioned to paint one-off pieces of furniture using Annie Sloan paint (I was the No1 stockist within Warwickshire of Annie Sloan paint at the time!).

With a keen eye for interiors, the odd customer would approach me, asking if I could re-upholster the seat on a chair that I was painting. I had dabbled in light upholstery, but it became apparent, very quickly, that’s where my passion was. I took the plunge and enrolled into an Upholstery Course at the Ministry of Upholstery in Manchester (all this whilst raising 2 small children) and it sort of snowballed from there…. And Zip Upholstery was born!
