The 5 Stages of Modern Upholstery February 25 2020

Hey! I thought it would be a good idea to delve into the various stages of Modern Re-Upholstery. There are so many elements to consider - it’s not just about the item looking right, it’s about the integrity and condition of say a wing back chair or footstool - that needs to be right.

I’ve based the stages on a recent Wing Back Chair I reupholstered for a lady in Ullenhall, Warwickshire.

1. Stripping it back

Firstly, I strip back the chair to inspect the quality of the frame. I remove any existing upholstery (if any), which includes the fabric, fillings, staples and various tacking. This is rather arduous - but exciting at the same time, as it's the start of a new lease of life!

2.
Repairs

Once the stripping back is complete, I then inspect the integrity of the frame. This particular chair had been in the ladies family for over 70 years, so it needed to remain sturdy.  I repair any faults such as worn joints and loose screws. I then thoroughly cleaned and wiped down every surface, leg and fixing - ready for the sanding, painting or varnishing of the frame.

3. Spring or Webbing Replacement

I’ll then check the integrity of each and every spring and replace any if need be and check the strength of the webbing and again, replace if need be.

4. Changing the Padding

Then I’ll remove and replace the filling and padding if it's needed so it’s all lovely and comfy - the seat pad, the arms and the back of the seat.

5. Reupholstering

Then it’s onto my favourite element; Upholstering the chair. This is where the skill in upholstery is needed and when the chair really comes to life. There are various techniques involved and you can include/add elements such as button holes, piping and edging.

As you can see from my 5 Stages of Modern Upholstery, modern upholstery is very different from traditional upholstery. It mixes old with contemporary. You can have a modern urban appeal with the frame of a 19th century - that’s the beauty.
